In this talk I will first review the stability problem for black holes and its relation to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. Arguably, this is the greatest unsolved problem in classical general relativity. Black rings are amongst the most remarkable new type of black holes that exist in higher dimensional asymptotically flat spaces. The fact that they are unstable together with their similarities with black strings, has opened up the possibility of finding counter-examples to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. In the second part of the talk, I will present new results about the non-linear evolution of the black ring instabilities and their final endpoints. In particular I will provide evidence that the weak cosmic censorship conjecture can be violated in higher dimensional asymptotically flat spaces.
