Abstract:

The Higgs and Inflation

I will discuss the Higgs and its role in inflationary cosmology. Given that the Higgs is the first scalar we have found I will ask the obvious question of whether the Higgs could itself be the inflaton. I will discuss some models where the answer is yes and some consequences when the answer is no. We will see that if the Higgs is not the inflaton then its dynamics during inflation can cause a catastrophic destabilization of the vacuum. Such a prediction would need to be remedied with new physics.
