Abstract:

Long distance modifications of gravity have become very popular in recent years with much attention focused on recovering the success of General Relativity within the tested limits. Of the few screening mechanisms available on the market, the Vainshtein mechanism has arguably been the favourite. In this talk I'll give an introduction to the Vainshtein mechanism, describing inevitable issues with strong coupling and unitarity, and discuss which energy scale should be treated as the break down of the low energy effective field theory describing a modification of gravity. I'll draw conclusions about strong coupling in galileons and massive gravity by studying the Goldstone sectors of massive gauge theories. - Room 516
