Abstract:

Among the unanswered questions about giant planet atmospheres, the nature of small-scale turbulence and the source of energy driving the jets is of particular interest. I will discuss our work analysing turbulent flow on Jupiter using Cassini observations, and how that fits in with recent laboratory experiments using a 13m diameter rotating tank, as well as ongoing work with models to try to understand the dynamics of giant planet atmospheres.
