Quantum Field Theory on a Black Hole Space-time in Higher Dimensions

I will discuss quantum field theory in curved space which provides an approximation to, and check on, proposed theories of quantum gravity. The theory has already produced some well known and important results such as Hawking radiation and the Unruh effect. Some of these will be reviewed as part of an introduction to the topic which will include the physical interpretation of its results. To extend the model to higher dimensions there will be a brief summary of brane world theory, focusing on the ADD model. I will then bring the topics together in the calculation of vacuum polarisation near a black hole on the brane, discussing formulation, renormalisation and practical calculation. I will then extend this to a summary of the methods required for calculation in the bulk. I will close by discussing the current position of this research and the myriad ways it could be extended in the future.
